Bento Gonçalves

Bento Gonçalves is a city of friendly people and exuberant nature, located at the top of the Serra Gaucha and ranks among the 10 largest economies of Rio Grande do Sul State.

Settled on the upper slope of Northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, the city is 124 km distant from the capital Porto Alegre, at an altitude of 618m above sea level. The estimated population of Bento Gonçalves is 112.318 inhabitants (IBGE), in 2014.

The city territorial area has the extension of 382.5 km2 and its rugged topography is characterized by slopes and valleys and a rich hydrographic network, being crossed by various streams. Among them, the main river is the Rio das Antas.
The climate subtropical of altitude is colder in the months of June and July, with average temperatures between 8°C and 17°C. The warmer months are January and February, with temperatures from17° C to 26o C.

Bento Gonçalves has the title of "Brazilian capital of grape and wine", is a pioneer in Brazil in the development of wine tourism (Revista Panorama Socioeconômico  de Bento Gonçalves – CIC /2013).

The Serra Gaucha is the largest and most important wine-growing region of Brazil, responsible for about 85% of the national production of wines (http://www.ibravin.org.br/regioes-produtoras). Bento Gonçalves produces 26.7% of the wine and derivatives of Rio Grande do Sul State (IBRAVIN -2012).
