The Conference

1.The 19th  CIAED – ABED’s  International Conference on Distance Education “Good Professionals make  good ODL programs: How are we?” will be held in September 2013 (dates and location will be determined in the coming days), opening space for researchers, educators and organizational leaders can present their works based on scientific research; submit reports of Innovative Experiences; participate in roundtable discussions with experts Brazil and other countries; hold lectures; insert themselves into working groups of different lines of action, and establish professional contacts.


Papers submitted to the Congress
The papers submitted for presentation in the Congress may belong to one of these two classes:
Scientific Paper (SP) or
Report of Innovative Experience (RE).
 

2.1. The Scientific Papers (SPs) submitted for presentation in Parallel Sessions at the 19th CIAED go through a rigorous selection process – blind review by peers – in which the author’s identity and institutional affiliation are elements that are not disclosed to those who are evaluating. The evaluation will be performed by a Scientific Commission made of members from the Scientific Council of ABED and other well-known specialists of the area. Each paper will be evaluated by at least three reviewers who are members of the Scientific Commission of the Congress.
The final result of the evaluation of each submission – corresponding to the average of the reviewers’ evaluations – will be the decisive indicator concerning the acceptance of scientific papers to be presented in the parallel sessions of the congress.
Based on the final result of the evaluation, the presentation of some papers may be made in poster sessions.
 
2.2. The Reports of Innovative Experiences (RE) correspond to the description and analysis of accomplishments in different types of categories (identified below) that are related to the Congress theme and that present innovative aspects. The REs will be submitted to the same evaluation process described in 2.1, respecting the characteristics of each class.
Reports of Innovative Experiences may be accepted for presentation in either parallel sessions or in poster sessions.

2.4. By the end of the judgment process, the Commission may take the following decisions concerning the paper:

2.4.1. Enough significance to deserve presentation in Parallel Session;


2.4.2. Directed to Poster presentation;


2.4.3. Returned to the author for modifications, after which it could be presented in Parallel Session;


2.4.4 Directly denied because it did not meet the scientific qualities necessary for an event of this nature.

Paper Submissions
3.1. The submission of papers to be analyzed by the Scientific Commission is exclusive for ABED Associates, and is related to the condition that all authors are Individual Associates that are in compliance with the payment of their annuity when the article is submitted.
Important note: the name of the advisor of thesis and dissertations should not be included as the co-author of the scientific paper, but it can be duly acknowledged in a footnote. 

3.2. The submission of papers will be solely and exclusively made through the online tool: http://www.abed.org.br/congresso2013/enviartrabalhos.htm


3.2.1 By submitting a paper the authors must be aware that for the presentation at the Conference their attendance is needed or at least one author or representative to present the paper, which must be duly registered in the Conference.


3.3. As a part of the submission process in the online tool, it is mandatory to indicate whether you agree or not with the term of commitment of presentation which is described herein:

“In case my paper is accepted by the Scientific Commission of the ABED ‘s 19th International Conference on Distance Education, I agree to attend for the presentation or to indicate a representative for the presentation on the day and time previously communicated, and I authorize its publication on the Association’s website. I am aware of the condition that the authors have to be affiliated and have to be in compliance with the payment of their annuities.”


3.5. Soon after the submission of the work, an automated message will be sent to the email address of the person that made the submission, confirming this procedure.


3.6. Simultaneously, the title of the paper and date of submission will be posted on the event website.


Important Note: The receipt of the automated message (item 3.3) and publication of the title of the paper on the website does not mean, in any way, approval for presentation at the same event.


Publication of Papers
4.1. The papers accepted will be electronically published in the Annals of the Conference on ABED’s website. Accepted papers that are not presented by the person responsible for them nor by representatives on the day and time established in the Conference program; will be taken out of the Annals and will be replaced by an explanatory note. Consequently, the authors will not be able to submit scientific papers to ABED’s events during a period of 2 (two) years.


4.2. The papers will be electronically published in two languages: Portuguese and English. The author of an Accepted Paper is responsible for providing its English version, so it can be published on the website of the event. The article must be sent to papers@abed.org.br by July 31st , 2013.

4.4. A computer with a basic operational system will be available for the presentation of papers during the event: Windows XP 2003 with Power Point, Data Show and Internet access.

Formatting Standards
5.1. Papers cannot exceed ten standard pages and must comply with the new spelling rules of the Portuguese language.


5.2. The page must be formatted on A4 paper, following these parameters: top margin: 2.5 cm; bottom margin: 2.5 cm; left margin: 3.5 cm; right margin: 2.5 cm.


5.3. Papers should be written in Word (extension doc 97-2003), Acrobat (extension pdf without restrictions), RichText/Write (extension rtf) or writer (extension odt),  Write in Arial font size 12, using only one side of the paper, 1.5 line spacing, left justified, 1.5 paragraph indentation, and page numbers must be placed at the top right side


5.4. The first page structure is the following:


5.4.1. - Centralized title with capital letters, size 16 and boldfaced. Foreign words must be in italics.


5.4.2. - After a two line space, identify: delivery place and date of the paper (mm/yyyy).


5.4.3. - After a space of three lines, write the name of the first author in size 12 centralized.


5.4.4. - After this, put the name of the institution with which you are affiliated and the electronic address (email), size 10.


5.4.5. – Do the same with the other authors. Leave a blank line between each of them.


5.4.6. - After a space of one line, identify the paper according to one of the Categories described in item 2.2.1.


5.4.7. - After a space of one line, identify the paper according to one of the Educational Sectors indicated in item 2.2.2.


5.4.8. - After a space of one line, identify the paper according to its Nature indicated in item 2.2.3.


5.4.9. - After a space of one line, identify the paper according to its Class indicated in item 2.2.4.


5.5. The abstract in Portuguese should be written in Arial font, size 12, justified, in italics with a maximum of 200 words, followed by the keywords.


5.6. After the abstract, leave a space of three lines and start the text of the paper.

5.7. Put the bibliographical references and the appendixes at the end of the text.


5.8. Footnotes, when essential, must be placed at the end of the paper, before the bibliographical references.

5.8.1. The titles of internal sections must be boldfaced and left justified.


5.9. Subtitles must have a 1.5 paragraph indentation in relation to the titles.


5.10. Pictures and tables must be subtitled.

Important note: Papers that do not indicate the email addresses and telephone numbers of all authors in the submission form of the online tool, will not be accepted.


Languages of the Congress
Portuguese

6.1. Other languages, in Plenary Sessions or Mini-Courses, are usually translated simultaneously into Portuguese.


Schedule

-Period for submission of papers: November 28th of 2012 to April 30th of 2013

- Evaluation of papers: May 1st to June 5th of 2013;

- Divulge on the website and communication of the results - June 9th of 2013;

- Submission of the English version of the work approved - July 31, 2013;

- Notifications of acceptance will be sent automatically by the system;

- Presentation at 19th CIAED in September 2013
